Good Point. Many are bent up a bit. Rain shouldn't matter but a quick
inspection is warranted in all cases. Some really old towers could use
re-galvanizing. At 65 cents a pound it can often make the difference
between going old and new. Before I built this last 300 footer I was
considering an old broadcast tower I had. It would have cost about $6000 to
galv it again, another 35 cents a pound or $3000 if I wanted it acid washed
first to remove surface rust. That is really the right way to do it. Bottom
line, between re engineering, modifying, galv and shipping it around to do
all that the 40 year old tower was $17K while the brand new tower was $24K.
So I built new. Construction was another $57k so the 10% difference wasn't
worth it.
