We have a Dyson DC-33 downstairs, works on hardwood or carpet, bagless but you must clean the filter periodically.
A very good product.

Oreck upstairs, very light, uses bags though.
Another good vacuum.

I recently bought a refurb Dyson v6 on Amazon for $180. Best investment I ever made. It replaced my hardwood cleaner and my bulky Kirby for carpets. I can do my entire first floor in under 20 mins and still have plenty of battery left. It's an engineering marvel. I highly recommend Dyson.

I'm in the market for a new Vacuum cleaner as my old one sucks, or
doesn't, which is the problem.  I could wade through thousands of
amazon reviews, but I thought I'd ask for a quick poll here.
Floors are 50% split between carpet and hardwood.  Occasionally we
watch a dog, so pet hair pickup would be a plus.  Does a
brand/model work good for you.  Does it not?  Is bagless really
    all it's purported to be.
