These guys take a photo with a survey stick next to the pole. Then I
guess this software calculates the heights of everything using the stick
as calibration. Dunno what it costs yet, but it seems like "set stick,
take photo" is the whole process.

Depends on how much accuracy you want.
If you have two people and a long tape it is much faster.
And you don’t have to tote and extend that stick.

Is that faster than using the stick? Seems like you still have to get
out measuring wheel or something to get that horizontal distance.

I use a theodolite app on my cell phone.
It is free. Just aim it up until you hit 45 degrees.
Move forward or back until the thing you are measuring is in the cross
hairs.
Then measure from your feet to the pole or line, add the distance from
the ground to your eye.
Or if you are a glutton for punishment, just pick any position,
measure the angle and do the trig.

Subject: [AFMUG] Telephone pole field survey laser tool
During field surveys I was measuring the height of pole attachments
with a telescoping measuring stick. I bumped into a power company guy
who showed me his tool that was shaped like a gun with an LCD display
and keypad on top. It was basically a laser range finder, but it also
took photos and stored the measurements.....I feel like it stored
coordinates from GPS as well.
Does anybody use these things and have a recommended brand I should
look at? Is it terribly spendy.
