Before I read this article, my understanding of "Lithium Ion" batteries was rather limited. I had not been aware of the many and varied chemistries for these batteries and the cost implications with the amount of cobalt.

From reading this, it appears that the next big step in Lithium Ion batteries is "NMC", and more specifically the "811" ratio of Nickel, Manganese, & Cobalt.

They are looking at energy density of 300 WH/Kg. By way of comparison, SLA batteries are in the 40-50 WH/Kg.
