African Cinema Conference presents... Dear Maina Mucoki, Ref: Presentation by “former Star Wars and Hollywood production artist Alex Lindsay”
Your information concerning the event scheduled for 22nd July 2003 at 6:00pm at the Jaffery Complex (Korean Culture Centre) in Dar es Salaam has be read with interest and noted. Alex Lindsay is no doubt a competent film technician with invaluable experience. As you have indicated his credentials are exemplary. It is also obvious that his work on computer graphics has developed within a highly specialised sector of the American film industry. Pixel technology offers many opportunities for innovation that can be an asset to a production. However, the operative phrase “high-end techniques” is worth taking seriously, in relation to what exist in Tanzania, and what is accessible to individual filmmakers and broadcasting institutions here. As a film producer currently working in Tanzania, my short experience in this country tells me that the immediate needs are not in the area of “high-end techniques”, but in much more fundamental areas of skills that would ensure both production quality and quantity. My concern therefore is that Alex Lindsay’s event may do more harm – reinforce inferiority; rather than enhance and support the Tanzanian “film industry”. As you may be aware, the recently establishment of Tanzania Independent Producer’s Association [TAIPA] indicates a new initiative to seriously address the issues of film & television production in Tanzania, with due regard to the highest standards of professional; and avoiding the false expectations of short cuts to excellence. This is most welcomed and provides a basis for my optimism. This optimism I believe is shared by all involved in this industry and involves a real commitment to the realisation of a viable and productive environment. It is within this spirit that the above views are being expressed. This letter is therefore both a request for further information and an expression of concern. Knowing the Tanzania “film industry” as I do, and being aware of the current quality and quantity of productions made in Tanzania, it would be useful to have a clearer idea of the purpose of this presentation and what specific outcome is expected.
