Dear Wikimedians, We are pleased to share the successful conclusion of the Africa Wiki Challenge (AWC) <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Event:Africa_Wiki_Challenge_2026>2026. This year’s campaign, under the theme “Water for Life in Africa,” brought together a diverse and committed community of organizers, collaborators, and contributors working across different Wikimedia platforms and languages to improve the representation of Africa’s water knowledge online.
We extend our appreciation to the 29 organizers across 15 countries who led local implementations with dedication and coordination. We also thank our partners and collaborators for their continued support and all participants whose contributions made this campaign impactful. Collectively, contributions were made across 6 Wikimedia platforms and 18 language editions, including Wikipedia (English, French, Arabic, Hausa, Igbo, Twi, Yoruba, Afrikaans, Dagbani, Ewe, and more), Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, Wikivoyage, Wikisource, and the Wikimedia Incubator. Together, the community achieved the following on the dashboard <https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/courses/OPEN_FOUNDATION_WEST_AFRICA/Africa_Wiki_Challenge_2026>: 6,150+ articles created, 14,700+ articles improved, 98,700+ total edits, 575 editors engaged, and 5,632 media files uploaded to Wikimedia Commons These outcomes reflect a growing, collaborative effort to document Africa’s water systems, sanitation infrastructure, and environmental realities—areas that remain underrepresented in global knowledge spaces. Beyond the metrics, this campaign continues to reinforce the importance of local knowledge, language diversity, and community-led contributions within the Wikimedia movement. The jury process continues, and we entreat all to remain patient as we work towards selecting the winners. As we close this year’s edition, we celebrate the collective impact made across communities and look forward to building on these efforts in future campaigns.
