There apparently was an African language conference just recently at
the University of Cape Town. Not much information on the web I can
find. A short article about it follows, but first, the relevant
webpage of its sponsor, ALASA, is http://www.alasa.org.za/

Getting empowered at African language gathering

July 04, 2006, 17:30

Language experts from around the globe are attending a conference on
African languages at the University of Cape Town. The theme of the
conference, hosted by the African Language Association of Southern
Africa, is "Being Empowered by African Languages".

The language experts say the major challenge facing indigenous
languages is that most have not developed enough concepts in existing
social disciplines.

Abner Nyamende, a UCT senior lecturer, says there's a need to empower
emerging professional translators to use language effectively. "There
are things like ululation which you cannot translate, and there are
idiomatic expressions that are difficult to translate as well as
expressions which when you translate loose meaning in the English
language".
