Don't forget the internet backbone is fiber. If the internet were considered one computer it would not work as is without light bussing data. And it's not just communication it distributes the computational capacity to massive parallelism and full-duplex synchronicity thus optimizing the whole topology immensely. The internet would be a slow asynchronous mess on an election bus. So it’s not just bit flipping but flip distribution since contemporary computational hardware naturally and holistically grows geographically distributed, IOW computers grow like weeds around the earth… offices, clouds, datacenters.. since people are distributed and many persons have a smart phone appendage now. (some would say it's the other way around :) Smart phone is really smart computer since the actual phone function is like 2% of the device’s capacity. Phone communicates wireless to cloud nodes interconnected via backbone light.
