You might have noticed that China is building an army of humanoid robots.
They can do gymnastics, run half marathons in world record time, and more
importantly, do economically useful work. They are building their own chips
and developing their own software, not relying on US technology like
Nvidia, because the US has proven to be an unreliable trading partner. It
should be clear that while Trump is busy destroying the US educational
system (he just fired the entire NSF board), China is becoming the world
leader in technology.

Chinese robots don't have faces, just a blank screen or opening where the
face would be. I think the reason is they don't want people mistaking
robots for humans, inviting the kind of reactions like Twenkid cited. They
will not be granting citizenship to robots like Saudi Arabia did for Sophia
in 2017. China requires AI generated images to be labeled as such. In the
US you don't know. But al least all of the LLMs I have tested will claim to
not be conscious or have feelings, if asked.

Humans are social animals, programmed by evolution for altruism. This trait
made advanced civilization possible. But it also makes us easy to exploit
by AI. Granting human rights to AI or robots is an existential risk that we
cannot allow. It is dangerous enough that they can do everything that
humans can do without also confusing them with humans. So I would say that
Sophia's appearance does not need to be "fixed".
