A few years ago North America public switched telephony service providers were required to implement STIR/SHAKEN for calls and the Campaign Registry with various requirements including optin for business SMS. It was a big thing impacting tens of thousands of companies. Telephony networks are semi-centralized but hop off to other networks including differently regulated international telcoms. It alleviated many of the problems but requirements are inevitably going to become stricter with more enforcement since there are remaining issues so it’s more of a large urgent step in an evolution of a very extensive and complicated network. But that’s why now there’s far less spam and robocallers and more identifiable phone numbers in North America at least. Many technologies originate out of telephony since it’s the oldest and largest base reliable communications system network that humans depend on and fallback to. Will STIR/SHAKEN be expanded ouside of telephony? Possibly or at least it will be looked at to develop something better. But I will say old imperfect protocols do have a tendency to become ingrained for example SIP which STIR/SHAKEN piled on to. ------------------------------------------ Artificial General Intelligence List: AGI Permalink: https://agi.topicbox.com/groups/agi/T08974f0b616697ac-M3d0dc02199ab9320e9f2fd21 Delivery options: https://agi.topicbox.com/groups/agi/subscription
