The patent was on a proprietary program to compress seismic data. It was one of many customer-specific compressors that I wrote. All of my open source programs like PAQ and ZPAQ remain free of patents, and I plan to keep it that way. If my employer didn't let me publish my work open source and unencumbered, I could just retire now (since I can afford to) and nothing would change. > It would be nice to see SOME way to survive, when technology of all sorts is > free, and none of us, not even you, can make enough to pay for our groceries. Sorry this is so hard to explain. It is like some artists are more successful than others. Do you think that the Beatles could explain their success to other musicians? Anyway, I tried to explain what you must do to prepare. The future is AI. I don't mean programs like OpenCog. I mean that the whole economy will be automated. The process will be very expensive. You have seen my cost estimates. It will take a lot of computing power, complex software, and vast quantities of personal data. That means lots of jobs for decades to come, each specializing on very narrow parts of the problem. You need to figure out ways to make the process less expensive. I don't mean patenting ideas that haven't been tested and making bold claims. I mean doing research and building things that actually work and giving them away to prove to others that you have the skills they want. Stop focusing on the market that is going away and focus on the market that is coming. The future is modeling other people's minds, predicting human behavior. -- -- Matt Mahoney, [email protected] ------------------------------------------- AGI Archives: https://www.listbox.com/member/archive/303/=now RSS Feed: https://www.listbox.com/member/archive/rss/303/21088071-f452e424 Modify Your Subscription: https://www.listbox.com/member/?member_id=21088071&id_secret=21088071-58d57657 Powered by Listbox: http://www.listbox.com
