Steve: The purpose of communication is to relate that which is NOT predictable. First time I’ve seen an AGI-er say this. The main purpose of *AGI* – and of the real world intelligence of all living agents - is to deal with the new and unpredictable in all spheres incl. language (quite contrary to everything AGI-ers have been saying about “predictable patterns”). The last time I said this, you blew up. The time before, John blew up. That’s because it’s so important – the crux of AGI and its opposition to narrow AI. Yes, all real world language is creative and unpredictable – it’s not like maths and logic – they are rationalisations/standardisations of language – but language isn’t meant to be – and can’t be – standardised – any more than the real world it describes. That’s why all attempts to extend NLP approaches to AGI are farcical failures – though NLP has narrow AI value, of course.
