When we talk about "patterns" we are not just talking about visual
patterns of course. For example, someone might say that he is looking
for a pattern in the behavior (of some animal or person or some
group.) In this case it should be obvious that they are talking about
a pattern that can be ABSTRACTED from the observations. There does
sound like an emphasis of a repeated pattern but since the variations
that might be tolerated could be so extensive they are not talking
about a repeated pattern that has to be directly abstracted from
superficial observation but rather a repeated behavior that was
abstracted from an insight that was derived from some superficial
observation. This leaves that door wide open. In fact, when someone
who is crazy begins seeing patterns his patterns may not even be tied
to any regularity that can be concrete. An example of that is of John
Nash's discovery of vast amounts of secret codes in the newspaper as
depicted in a Beautiful Mind. So, just as a person might have the
sense that a diverse kind of stone work does not constitute a pattern
another person could find a vast range of patterns in the stone work.
The question for us is whether this kind of method could be used to
reliably recognize a particular input or a kind of input or a range on
kinds of input.
