Matt, Camel, et al, I think you both have it wrong. Humans appear compelled to commit society's efforts and resources in counter-productive and self-destructive directions. It certainly doesn't take an AGI to see this, and no AGI could ever overcome this without exerting SO much force that it would clearly be viewed as "unfriendly". The sorts of things that are needed are EXACTLY what people seek to keep AGIs from doing.
We value peace over all forms of population control, so SOMETHING very bad is going to happen when the population bubble "bursts". Perhaps someday when I am (even) older, after listening to the evening news regarding the draconian population control measures that are being successfully enforced, akin to those China is now enforcing, there will be a knock on my door. A uniformed officer will introduce a couple of young ladies that have been assigned for me to impregnate. Only then will the light of hope for the human race dawn for me. Until then - the future of the human race seems pretty hopeless, with or without AGIs. Just imagine the resistance if an AGI or human tried to institute THAT, or ay other effective measures of population control or genetic selection. Any thoughts?
