The scene in Greg Bear's "Queen of Angels" where Jill awakens to sentience is one of very few scenes in any book I've read that has repeatedly - not just on the first reading - brought tears to my eyes.

My copy of the book has Greg Bear's autograph on that page. Wish me luck, folks.
