I guess what I did was trying to think "Ok, how would a patch have to look in order to touch six others?" So I started filling out squares with one colour until the patch had enough edges to touch six others, and filled out one square of each colour adjacent to it. Then trial and error with simply expanding the other patches until they touched each other.
