The ones with ``dot'' spelled out are backups that are created by the
installer when you try to install a new version and you already have an
older one.  This is to ensure that you don't lose any data that you may
not be able to replace easily (i.e. pak files).

Sorry it's not documented and I agree with Sebby -- we really do need a
better system for tracking issues.  Perhaps I should look into that
today (Launchpad).
