Are you saying the shortcut problem occurred when you installed 0.3.0 downloaded from agrip.org.uk? Did you (once and once only) ask it to download and install ActivePerl? (That would supply you with a suitable perl.exe.)
Issuing connect tbrn.net should be fine -- if you don't type a master server address first then it will assume it should use agrip.org.uk. Regarding the password thing, I am a bit unsure. There was a bug in the last RC version that could have affected you, so make sure you're using 0.3.0.
