Matthew, have you had success locating an intel Mac?  Feel free to  
write off-list if you'd like.  I should have a bit of time next week  
to do some quick testing and possibly even to help adapt that compass  
routine if you'd like.  I believe I have something in JQ which might  
help.  I have a routine to snap the player (on demand) to the nearest  
compass direction not only to automatically repair the compass heading  
after a force push, but also so they could use the mouse and then  
restore their compass.  So with just a tiny bit of adaptation, I'm  
sure that would work for this too.
