Never mind that I know how to set up servers, but don't ask me to get the
stupid thing working stand-alone. I fail. I don't know why but it just
doesn't care to work.
Honestly, with as many new people play on there all the time, just join the
server and see what happens. If you're bad, so what? You're there to
learn.
And honestly, playing against bots locally will *not* show you the kinds of
people you'll be up against when you do finally get online so if I might
just give you the useful advice to just do it and see what happens?
Or go to the website, pick a time when the server is empty, then go on.
Then bring in a handful of bots and play that way.
Though as I say the bots won't give you a proper experience, you'll at
least get some idea of what you're going to expect. Try it and see.

Hey there Andre... I got the portable aq and have been wanting to play
on your server, but would like to practice with your interesting key
bindings offline to start. I can get the classic game to start, but
changing gamedir to qw didn't work even though the files seem to be all
there. Any help please...
Once I get used to the key bindings I'll be there...
