Well, after a step back and trying the zquake binary, noting that the server compiles but the clients didn't, I re-examined the output of "make help" and found the problem. The software rendering version wasn't supposed to, this Matt was kind enough to tell me a long time ago, and it's the sdl option I wanted. The glsdl option didn't work either, but I am happy with just the sdl as that is what I'd use anyway, though I may come back to that one in future. I still have a curiosity I'm trying to sort out, but I'll fight with it a little longer and write back later.
Take care all...
Cheereo!
