Hi all, got some feedback from a few people on the proposed licensing change of Aiki Framework to the Sharing Agreement.
The basic idea is that many of us working on the project have come to the conclusion that supporting the copyright regime doesn't help support the sharing of our code. Rather, its better to release code and content under a simple agreement like CC0 or the old CC Public Domain Declaration. The idea is that rather than push our code to be virally supported with copyleft conditions, its better for people and companies to free their code for use. Please see http://sharism.org/agreement for the license text. The ideas are simple, and if anything it will get simpler. The sharing agreement is compatible with CC0 1.0, and if anything we will remove more language on that page to make it more clear that the Sharing Agreement is an agreement with the world that some content: audio, video, image, text and source code, is released as much as possible from its copyright (and where possible other neighboring rights). Many of us have been tossing around on the irc and other channels about this change to the Sharing Agreement. The Sharing Agreement is more free than the AGPL, and it removes as many restrictions as possible from the code with the idea that more people will use Aiki Framework if its more shareable and clear that its available for sharing. Sooo, that is what I propose. Since the copyright is attributed to the company Aiki Lab Pte Ltd, this change is rather simple. I would also rather us go wholesale into the Sharing Agreement now rather than dual license the code, since it would be basically meaningless anyway to have a license that is releasing the code and content in the software, and then retaining a dual license with the more restrictive and misunderstood AGPL. Remember, we want to make it easier and more clear that Aiki Framework is free for any use, and simple to use, and develop on. We are hopeful to make this change rather soon before the Aiki 0.9.0 release, which is long overdue. So, if there are points of discussion lets have. If others are more comfortable sticking with the AGPL, the last release has this license. However, I hope everyone on here sees the line of logic to try and make Aiki Framework more abundant and the licensing less confusing. As we have learned from Open Clip Art Library, releasing into the public domain/CC0 can help a project grow. Even today I was sent an email from someone saying how great the Open Clip Art Library is and telling me how they used their clipart and that they gave credit to the Open Clip Art Library, even though that is not required, but socially encouraged. We have to remember that licensing is an invitation for people to help on the project, but not what needs done most, which is actually help make Aiki Framework better and to help write code on the project. Lets work on that and get the 0.9.0 release out the door! https://launchpad.net/aikiframework/+milestone/0.9.0 Cheers to all, Jon -- Jon Phillips 王✳爻气 http://fabricatorz.com ✳ skype: kidproto ✳ irc: rejon +1.415.830.3884 (global) ✳ +86-187-1003-9974 (beijing) _______________________________________________ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~aikiframework-devel Post to : [email protected] Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~aikiframework-devel More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
