I don't know for certain. As far as I know, what actually happens is similar to c.) in your list. When the service is stopped, the thread stops immediately. But, the "heartbeat" from the executor to the manager also stops, which informs the manager that the thread wasn't completed and it then finds another executor to use.
Is it a hack? Are there better ways to do it?... maybe. But it works, it's transparent, and the bandwidth cost is nil.
