Dan, I do it first for myself - I like checking information that comes by me, from either side. I trust no-one off the bat. Before the Poseur Goldblatt post I had no idea Obama was Obama II, and all that other family history. I never heard of Jesus Barabbas nor Berth Milton before either, but it was a fun distraction.
Second, I hate misinformation and the troubles people get into because of it. I haven't spoken to my brother in law since he forwarded the amazing post about Qu'an verse 9:11. It took me 5 seconds to find it on Snopes another couple minutes to read several translation of the actual verse.
