Cybercrime Bill
Dear Friend,
In a matter of days Americans will have a new law on the
books to protect themselves against identity theft and cybercrime.
Last November we came together to tell you about our crucial
piece of legislation -- the Identity Theft Enforcement and Restitution Act --
which would expand and strengthen existing identity theft laws to keep up with
increasingly sophisticated cybercriminals. Online activists like you sent over
20,000 messages to Congress in support of our legislation.
Thanks to your efforts, our cybercrime legislation finally
passed in the House of Representatives yesterday, and the President is expected
to sign it into law this month.
This bill is long overdue. A recent study found that more
than eight million Americans fell victim to identity theft in 2005, and the
Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development has called on world
governments to take more aggressive action in the fight against identity theft
and cybercrime.
That's exactly what this bill will do, by making it more
difficult for cyber-criminals to evade federal law, and allowing the victims of
identity theft the opportunity to seek full restitution in Federal court. Our
legislation also makes it a felony to distribute malicious spyware to 10 or
more computers, and directs the U.S. Sentencing Commission to review its
guidelines for penalizing such crimes.
Again, we cannot thank you enough for joining our efforts to
pass this critical legislation into law.
