I went through this a couple years ago. Besides the obvious ban on
sharp stuff what I learned was that tools over 7 inches in length are
prohibited from carry-on bags, as are fire extinguishers, from both
carry-on and checked baggage. When I went through security (in
Wichita, KS, for what that's worth) the TSA agent opened my tool bag,
and seemed surprised/overwhelmed at the number of items inside. She
gave them a cursory glance and said "You're okay, but next time you
should really check that bag." The Northwest Airlines gate agent was
a little less willing to stick to his employer's published rules, and
insisted that I "gate check" either the tool bag or my backpack,
despite the fact that these items were clearly within their published
"one carry-on plus one personal item" rules.

Subject: [alfa] flying with tools
Hi guys. Taking a cross country car trip soon - CA to FL - and was wondering
what I might be able to carry on the plane with me on the way to CA. I know
sharp pointy things like screwdrivers would be out, but what about wrenches,
sockets, wirestrippers, sidecut pliers, etc? Anybody done this recently?
TIA, Ron.
