The new starter is a gear reduction starter, it's smaller, lighter, and turns
your engine over *much* faster than the older starter. No need for the front
mounter starter support anymore, very little worries about broken bellhousings,
and better cranking. Nothing wrong with that..

That said, the starter requires a specific ring gear. I'm assuming Alfa Parts
would know that. I'd love to find out I've got the proper ring gear in my
Berlina, because I've got a rebuilt gear reduction starter and I don't feel
like replacing the ring gear if I don't have to.

If you're still just getting a click, with a new starter/solenoid, and have
checked and double checked all of your grounds, then try hot wiring the starter
(i.e. apply volts directly to the solenoid). If it cranks, then your problem
is most likely your ignition switch.

I've said it a million times, I strongly recommend installation of a starter
relay on the early cars. If your ignition switch is tired, this might fix your
problem. If your ignition switch is fried, then a starter relay will greatly
extend the life of the new one..

Headlight relays are good things too...

Well it turns out that my faulty memory means I did NOT have a spare early
Marelli starter, I had a spare SPICA pump. What I did do was go to Alfa
Parts in Berkeley and get a new, small starter for $465. I put it in and still
get...the same click with a no start. Since I'm getting the click, I'm at the
moment presuming the wiring to the starter is fine. I'm about to go down
and check the main chassis ground to see if it is the issue.

Alfa Parts said the newer starter with the smaller rare earth magnets (?)
is WAY better, but he didn't elaborate. Anybody know why it's better?

Just cleaned yeserday's black from the fingernails...here we go again...
