Joe you need to verify cam timing by using this template

  and  do a compression check. It 
sounds like your timing belt has jumped time and you  may have bent a 
valve.  Set your crank pulley at Top Dead Center "P" mark  by turning engine 
clockwise as viewed from front of car.
