May be not rats, but mice can sometimes carry acorns into the timing belt
covers and I have seen pieces of acorn shell in there. A piece of acorn shell
on the belt can certainly cause a slip at the crank. Perhaps the lack of oil
leaks from your blocked tensioner has removed the mouse deterrent that the Alfa
engineers had so thoughtfully incorporated into their design!

I found it a good idea to set some mouse traps and check them regularly to keep
the mouse population under control and your Alfas out of harm's way.

I'm very sorry to hear that your belt slipped. We'll all keep our
collective fingers crossed for you.

Would you do us all a favor? When you remove the belt, go over it very
carefully with a magnifying glass.
