I'm sure you can/have googled for LISP, and read a great deal about it, by now. It's a very powerful and expressive language, designed for AI programming work, but it was also used, for instance, by the founders of Yahoo!. It allowed them to quickly make changes and upgrades faster than was possible with their competitors, who were using C++, and their programs ran faster than those who programmed a lot of their "core" programs in Java or PHP. (Which they also used, but not for time-critical parts).
Since AI hasn't exactly flourished in the last decade or two, your school was smart to teach you a language that is useful to you in the marketplace, today.
