I'd add the following:
After opening the preferences dialog, press O for Output, then immediately press Alt plus C for configure.
After choosing your new audio interface, there's an Apply button in the Configure dialog which you should probably press first, then tab to and press OK, then tab to the Close button and press it, which will close the Preferences dialog.
