Hello Stewart,

I am confused over your question. A turntable will have a tone arm. On the
tonearm it will have a head shell. That head shell will mount a wide choice of
cartridges. Each cartridge will have a specific stylus, sometimes 2 choices.
All depend upon how much you want to pay. There are many cheap turntables that
have tone arm, head shell and cartridge all as one plastic unit and not
interchangeable. £100 - £200.

As for straight into a mixer this depends if the turntable chosen has a pre-amp
built in. Again these cheap turntables are designed for putting vinyl onto a
computer so have the pre-amp built in. But a serious audiophile would carefully
choose the cartridge, stylus and pre-amp. But you would be looking at £1000
plus just for the turntable without cartridge or pre-amp.

Surely a question for a blind user is how automatic is the turntable or is
manual operation easy for that particular blind person.

Careful mounting of the turntable is very important. Especially if needing to
feel the alignment of the stylus on the record's edge. In addition, vibrations
of keyboard operation to start the recording. These cheap turntables are
plastic boxes and vibrations just travel through all parts of the deck. As most
cartridges track at 1 - 3 grams it is easy to make the stylus jump and damage
the record. Ideally, a turntable should be mounted on the wall without any
other equipment and level.

A lot of the crackles that are heard on vinyl are dirt trapped in the groove.
Thus if a serious digital copy is to be made a serious clean is required.
Again, the best is another £1000. But cheap options like the spin clean are
around £40. Don't get me started on the chemical structure of vinyl cleaning
fluid.

Regards,

Gena
