there's a lot of talk about user preferences being overcrowded, there are
suggestions that options are removed (and sometimes this results in crippled
functionality).

to resolve this problem (and it should be resolved pretty soon - amount of
available options is increasing) two possible approaches should be considered :

1. a separated configuration ui
the best example i know is xine.
in this case we have a gui for every option, but there are 2[/3] variants of it
- beginner, advanced[, expert]. probably at first launch for every user should
ask which level to present by default, stored as user preference.
advantages : easier to use
disadvantages : harder to implement, more effort needed to maintain

2. single, simplified ui and advanced options in configuration files
something like firefox.
user interface has only most used options, all other are available through
configuration files (preferably - single file). ideally it's a file that
follows
basic configuration files principles - plaintext, # comments a line etc. oo.org
could parse this file at startup and, if needed, recreate the contents in a
format that is easier for it to use internally. it could also be xml, but that
would introduce some difficulties for users - either a special editor, or
harder
to edit format, possible syntax mistakes etc.
advantages : easier to implement
disadvantages : harder to use, needs very good documentation on all options

in both cases every option must be very carefully examined to determine wether
it should go in to [beginner/advanced] ui or not. no option in the process may
be lost :)

umm, some keywords : settings, preferences, configuration, separation,
separate,
advanced, beginner, expert
