No, it simply uses ghostscript. It's called "the Adobe Distiller driver"
though, for some reason unknown to me (see below).

Just like that: I can select letter paper, a4 paper, a3 paper, legal paper in
the printer properties, but no A1 or A0.

1. start the printer management thingy
2. choose "Connect a PDF converter", next
3. choose "The Adobe Distiller(tm) driver", next
4. select the gs command line, next
5. finish
6. start impress
7. create a new, empty presentation
8. choose file/print
9. select the printer you just created, choose properties
10. the paper sizes now list letter, legal, executive, legder,
11x17, screen, A3 and A4, but no large (ie. A0, A1) paper sizes.
