I'd like to suggest that if you are opening from writer, for example. The defualt file type should match the filetype selected in the "save all files as" section in Tools>Options>Load/Save area. So that for example only *.doc files are shown. This would make it easier for low level users to browse for their files. Same suggestion applies for Calc, Base, ect...
