In your case the save recovery information system worked well but the structure of the open document itself (on your harddrive) seems to be the problem. As you've said, you can save the file to another one and close it afterwards. So simply open this document and save it XLS again solves the problem with your XLS file. About the recovery process, I see no chance how OOo can handle this in case of a power outage.
