I have an English installation and installed the German dictionary on top. I opened a document of german and tried to spell check it as German. However, while the spellchecker shows (English(UK)) when English(UK) is selected, it shows () when German(Germany) is select and no spellcheck is possible. If all the text is selected, then Format... Character... and the text changed to German(Germany), the spellcheck works OK.
