My guess is that a broken font causes the crash.

Try to isolate the font that causes the crash by not using the font-dropdown
(since when you open it all fonts that are displayed will be rendered using that
font → you cannot tell what font causes the crash), but by using the
Format|Character dialog. Just select the fonts one after the other. If OOo
crashes  you got the guilty one.
If you cannot crash OOo this way, then the reason lies somewhere else.
