There is a connector button in the draw toolbar though, and discovered that it is possible to draw a conenctor via the Draw application and copy/paste it into writer, and use as expected. Obviously the functionality is available, it just needs the toolbar change to access it. Another alternative would have been to use draw and insert the finished document into the writer document, but the insert->file menu item doesn't work (at least for me).
