The problem was present in the OO file my colleague sent me, before I imported 
the .ppt file. However, it turns out he started from a .ppt supplied by 
someone else, edited it using OO, and stored it as .odp before sending it to 
me. I obtained the original .ppt file from him and edited it using OO, but the 
problem didn't reproduce. It seems therefore that the problem arose at some 
stage while he was editing the .odp file. Since he doesn't use speaker notes, 
he wouldn't have noticed when the problem crept in.

I don't understand how the preview object can be maintained separately from 
the slide for which it is a preview. Surely the two would get out of step, 
precisely as has happened here.
