In the formula, 5 over 8, the 5 digit is left aligned, but 8 is center aligned.
But {5} over  {8} has all its digits center aligned.

It should be preferable that the first format, 5 over 8, is center align by
default. And the format, {5 } over {8}, can do the first alignment as now.
