I've tried opening .doc files by double-clicking them and by the file open menu method to no avail. I've already completely reloaded OO 2.0 as I mentioned in my original post and as you suggested as the 'remedy' so I suppose I'm left with either reloading OO 1.1.5 or abondoning OO altogether and going back to MS Office. Not sure which route I'll choose now - I was hoping for a little better support...
