to reprodule this problem:
1) you need to checkout fontconfig from cvs repository.
cvs -d :pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvs/fontconfig co -rfc-2_4_branch
fontconfig
build & install it.
2) get a font that has a localized family name such as
http://distfiles.gentoo.org/distfiles/bkai00mp.ttf.gz, and put it into ~/.fonts
or any other directries fontconfig can find it.
3) lanuch openoffice with command LANG=zh_CN LC_ALL=zh_CN ./swriter.

ps. fontconfig-2.3.x already surpports localized family name, but it doesn't
export them to applications because at that comment some applications (such as
mozilla, openoffice) doesn't manage localize family name well. Now newer
mozilla, gtk/qt apps work well, but it's not true for openoffice. Anyhow, family
is encoded in utf8, not any others.
