Let me quote a mail from Wolfgang:
Sorry, I wasn't able to figure out how to post an additional comment to the
issue.
I found out that the root cause of the problem was insufficient file permissions
on /dev/dri/card0- it had permissions 0660 and was owned by root.root, thus
preventing acces for normal users. After changing the permissions to 0666
both the setup routine and the other OO applications worked again.
Obviously OO should provide a useful error message in such a case.
