The workaround that you suggest works. The Powerpoint error message and help text imply that Openoffice did not convert correctly: "The selected file does not appear to be a valid Microsoft PowerPoint file. It might be another kind of Microsoft Office file or a file created by using a different product." Some decision makers have banned use of Openoffice as a result of the belief that the it doesn't convert properly.
