I'm not sure of the cause, though. I was able to open the document ok in Excel, then save it again as "batches2.xls" (without making any changes), then successfully open "batches2.xls" in OpenOffice. I admit that it was still very slow in opening and saving the document, and in working with it after having opened it up. It seems like simply opening and re-saving the document (with a possibly newer version of Excel) solved the problem. Do you know what version of Excel that document was saved with? I am using Excel 2003. We need to narrow this issue down before I can confirm it. I tried to duplicate the crach by creating a document with a single checkbox in it with my version of Excel, but OOo handled it fine. Maybe you can try the same with whatever version of Excel you are using? BTW, I'm changing the priority to P2. This is a crash/data loss issue, which makes it a P2, not a P1.
