OK, after killing one of my machines (experimenting with the runtime linker is
dangerous) I finally think I know what's going on.

I did my testing on Solaris 10 Sparc.

The culprit is the Solaris runtime linker. Relevant PatchId for Solaris 10 Sparc
is: 117461

FCS (without any 117461 patch): works
Patchlevel 117461-06:           segfault
Patchlevel 117461-08 (T-patch): works

My conclusion it *is* the runtime linker.

With this knowledge I searched the database and found the following Sun Alert
Notification -- the article is only available online if you got a Sun service
contract. I'm pretty sure this is our problem. The article mentions which
patches you have to apply to your system to fix the problem.

------ Sun Alert Notification ------

 Sun(sm) Alert Notification

    * Sun Alert ID: 101995
    * Synopsis: Certain Patches May Cause Applications With a Large Number of
"delayed" Loadable Dependencies to Experience Startup Failures
    * Category: Availability
    *
      Product: Solaris 9 Operating System, Solaris 10 Operating System, Solaris
8 Operating System
    * BugIDs: 6314115, 6332983
    * Avoidance: T-Patch, Patch
    * State:
    * Date Released: 19-Oct-2005
    * Date Closed:
    * Date Modified: 07-Nov-2005, 21-Nov-2005, 29-Nov-2005

1. Impact

On systems with certain patches installed (as described in section 2 below),
applications that reference large numbers of "delayed" loadable shared objects
(where the shared objects load slowly and do not explicitly define their
required dependencies), may experience start-up failure or may terminate due to
an error of the runtime linker.

For instance, If the patch 109147-39 is installed which includes only the fix
for BugID 6314115 (and not 6332983), then an application startup failure may
occur. (i.e. Sun Cluster machines may not boot into cluster mode due to their
global devices not mounting).

Notes:

   1. The fix for BugID 6314115 is only a partial fix for this issue. The fixes
for both 6314115 and 6332983 are required to fully resolve this issue.
   2. The patches listed below which cause these application failures are likely
to have been installed to resolve a security issue. See Sun Alert 101794 at
http://sunsolve.sun.com/search/document.do?assetkey=1-26-101794-1

2. Contributing Factors

This issue can occur in the following releases:

SPARC Platform

    * Solaris 8 with patch 109147-36 through 109147-39 and without patch
109147-40
    * Solaris 9 with patch 112963-21 through 112963-24 and without patch
112963-25
    * Solaris 10 with patch 117461-03 through 117461-07

x86 Platform

    * Solaris 8 with patch 109148-36 through 109148-39
    * Solaris 9 with patch 113986-17 through 113986-20 and without patch
113986-21
    * Solaris 10 with patch 118345-05 through 118345-13 or 121208-01

3. Symptoms

Certain applications that may be slow on loading (i.e. Sun Cluster, Checkpoint)
may refuse to start or crash on attempted startup.

4. Relief/Workaround

The following T-Patches are available through normal support channels for the
following releases:

SPARC Platform

    * Solaris 10 T-Patch T117461-08

x86 Platform

    * Solaris 8 T-Patch T109148-40
    * Solaris 10 T-Patch T121208-02

Note: It is not advisable to remove the patches that cause this issue, as they
are required to resolve the Security issue as described in Sun Alert 101794 at
http://sunsolve.sun.com/search/document.do?assetkey=1-26-101794-1.

5. Resolution

This issue is addressed in the following releases:

SPARC Platform

    * Solaris 8 with patch 109147-40 or later
    * Solaris 9 with patch 112963-25 or later

x86 Platform

    * Solaris 9 with patch 113986-21 or later

A final resolution is pending completion.
