2005 -------
The problem is that the fontconfig documentation does not specify the encoding
(which is why i assumed it was in the current locale) of the strings it returns.
But looking into pango i see that strings do not seem to get any treatment
before goint up to gtk which in turn handles all strings as UTF8, so i assume,
that indeed UTF8 should be the encoding on all systems using fontconfig.
