------- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thu Dec 22 15:16:59 -0800 2005 ------- Hi All, <Introduction> I used to build a kind of "photo album" embedding my digital camera images as external linked images to writer and adding some text to it. This was very usefull at the beginning. I did not rescale my images, so many are high resolution. By the time I recognised an unpleasant behaviour that the more images I added the more main memory writer allocates on loading the document. It seems that writer caches *all* images in memory at start. This is somehow logical but there should be a limit to memory usage. I found no parameter for this in writer. <Suggestion> an enhancement to external linked images in writer, that a) limits memory usage to certain level, e.g. drop some cached images, or b) maybe an option to compress / downscale images during runtime. <Description / example> (will add an attachement with example afterwards) - create a writer document with many external images (~ 50 of 1400 x 1000 size) - on loading the doc all images are loaded, and to make it worse, even well compressed JPEG's are then inflated to uncompressed size - writer seems to keep all in memory at start, so I experienced up to 700 MByte memory usage -> IF later using e.g. print preview and go through all pages will release a significant amount of memory! Why promote this enhancement? - extensive usage makes this good feature unusable (when OS starts swapping) - I assume relevance for professional use (manuals with many images, academic work with measurements etc.) Tested on Linux x86 and Windows. Later attachment contains 50 images and consumes ~200 Mbyte. Adding more images will result in linear growth.
