Since then I've reinstalled completely from scratch (which also fixed another problem) and, to my surprise, range names are now available across sheets in the same document. The difficulty persists as far as range names in other documents are concerned. That was discussed in http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=28514.
